But if Salad Days left you itching for more, then by all means, indulge yourself.īe sure to catch Mac DeMarco at one of his upcoming tour dates. If you weren’t a fan before, this record is unlikely to sway you. It’s pure, unadulterated DeMarco, from beginning to end. That’s all apparent on standout track Without Me, a personal highlight of the album, that’s dripping with bittersweet sentimentalities, feeling like it’s taken right out of a teenager’s diary: “Will she love me again tomorrow? I don’t think so.” The drums are as tight as ever, the basslines and bold and funky, Mac’s voice is as sweet as ever. His slacker days are starting to seem that they’re a little bit far behind him now, and the pump organ riff that the song is centered on accentuates the more melancholy sounding, wiser lyrics – but at the heart of it, it still feels like a Mac track, and a great one at that. Comparing the beautiful A Heart Like Hers to some of Mac’s earlier work is quite startling. The riff on album opener The Way You’d Love Her dances playfully around your ears. The jingly jangly guitars that Mac is famous for seem much tighter. Sure, it’s a little short and you’d probably prefer to go out for a meal and have a proper catch up, but it leaves a smile on your face the whole day nonetheless. It’s like bumping into a friend at a supermarket. 2014’s Salad Days was a breezy and hypnotic foray into the workings of Mac’s mind. And nowhere is that more clear than on his soon to be released mini-LP Another One. But they still bring something new to the table. But man, he can make some beautiful sounding songs. He’s been touring his latest album relentlessly, and only managed to record these songs in his spare time. And he’s not lost those chilled-out sensibilities that make him so lovable, but he’s added a more melancholy edge to this new set of songs.

The charismatic everyman is growing and expanding, and while there aren’t as many earworms to be found here, he’s hopelessly endearing – even with a broken heart.Mac DeMarco is a goofball. The future of Mac DeMarco doesn’t lie solely in his talent for crafting immaculate jangle-pop. The dreary synths cascading downwards and an invitation to My House By The Water speak volumes.

Sounding like a lost track from The Virgin Suicides, Mac bleeds over weary sliding notes: “Tried so hard to believe in something that will never be, never be.” There’s no coming back from here, even with the chirpy rhythms and airy harmonies of I’ve Been Waiting For Her, which are left feeling a little like a forced smile.īringing the album almost to its end, Without Me is a cathartic sigh of acceptance. The faint delicacy of A Heart Like Hers will cause your own tender ventricles to rupture. The misty subdued synths of the title track carry his mournful words “afraid she might not love you anymore”. On The Way You’d Love Her, his syrupy guitar riffs wobble more than ever, bend- ing and stretching under his gentle vocals – a beautifully burned-out ode to a romance slipping out of reach. A forlorn and disillusioned sense of insecurity is palpable. One More Love Song is another of Mac’s songs that I think was specifically made for smoking joints and lying down (see also: the title track from Another One and Salad Days’ Chamber of Reflection.) The chilled out, straight drum-beat is accented with glowing guitar and a serene synth bobbing along. Single-handedly he developed the cult of Mac, a success propelled by his sloppy, sincere self.īut something’s up with Mac on Another One.
